As a member of the first coed class at Amherst College, Karla Rae Fuller ’80 became the first woman and the first black Amherst-Doshisha Fellow, a fellowship for graduating seniors to travel and teach in Kyoto, Japan. Ms. Fuller will discuss her complex journey to receive the fellowship, her teaching, and her travels during her stay in Kyoto, as well as how that experience subsequently influenced her research interests. She will speak about how the joys and challenges of this unique experience could only have happened because of her time at Amherst College.
Karla Rae Fuller, MFA, PhD is currently an Associate Professor of Cinema and Television Arts at Columbia College Chicago. She teaches in the Cinema Studies and Screenwriting areas. She received her PhD from Northwestern University, MFA from Columbia University in New York City and BA from Amherst College. Read her full bio here.
